I'm Back...

First, I want to thank everyone for the hundreds of emails and letters I received asking me to start a new blog! OK, so maybe that didn’t happen, but here I am.

I wanted to wait until our little one, Sabrina, was doing funny shit and giving me something to write about. Then it turned out I didn’t have time to write, even if I wanted to as my kid just doesn’t nap. Then eventually I stopped thinking in terms of blog posts. But now I’m back with a new blog, and let’s just say it’s a coincidence that the new blog launch coincides with my return to work.

Because frankly, it doesn't coincide with her doing funny shit, because she still isn't doing it. To Chris and I, she does some funny shit. But even the most egotistical parent can't believe that everyone is going to think it's funny that she blew bubbles, or made this funny face when I said something. Which leads me to the other issue, which is most of what she does is very much "you had to be there", and even if you'd been there, as her non-parent, you likely wouldn't find it amusing.

Even though she's not yet the laugh riot I know she will someday be, I probably have enough to write about to keep this thing somewhat active...I mean, I don't have to write about her, it's really all about me, isn't it? In the meantime, let's catch up with some notable points over the past few months:

The mesh underwear they give you postpartum in the hospital were a huge disappointment. I was actually looking forward to them as so many people said, "Wear the mesh underwear, they are FANTASTIC, they are sooo comfortable!" I don't know what kind of underwear these people normally wear, but I found them to be nothing special and actually quite airy. I however, am quite anti-thong as I feel we wear underwear for a reason and one of those reasons is covering your ass, so my underwear is always rather comfortable. Anyway, I not only exclaimed to the nurse, "Oh, the famous mesh underwear!" to which she responded with a really odd expression, but I actually took several pairs home because people said I should. Needless to say, I have several unused pairs of mesh underwear up for grabs if anyone is interested.

Postpartum recovery isn't necessarily that bad, it wasn't for me and believe me, if I'm experiencing any pain or discomfort I talk about it. A lot. After I've googled the living shit out of it and ruled out my impending death. The only problem I had was bladder related, as in "hey, is it normal to feel like your bladder is going to fall out when you walk? Hello?", but that eventually went away and by 4 weeks postpartum, I was running again. Without a diaper, I might add.

We ended up with an easy kid with a pretty mellow temperament, and while it would be nice to think that I had anything at all to do with that, I know we didn't - we just freaking lucked out. Granted, I kind of think we deserved it after all we went through to get here, but I was totally expecting a colicky, crying round the clock baby so Sabrina has been a very happy surprise for us. Although I will note that when you have a baby that is that good, when she does get fussy I've been known to react with shock and surprise, which given the fact that she's a newborn, is a bizarre reaction. She's normally so easy so when she has the rare meltdown, I have no idea what to do with her anymore. I look at her like, "What they hell is this?? Are you crying?" and then I attribute it to one of those pesky growth spurts. Even though she's nowhere near when a spurt normally occurs.

Not all new parents are totally sleep deprived. Sabrina started sleeping through the night at about 2 1/2 months. Granted that doesn't mean we sleep through the night, as she has a tendency to grunt and yell in her sleep. And since Chris insists on using the monitor even though her room is 5 steps from ours, her noises are totally amplified and sound like she has a microphone for each and every ladylike grunt that escapes her perfect little lips. I say we don't need the monitor, that I will wake up when she needs something since I can hear her loud and clear without the monitor. I guess I can understand Chris' concern, since he's the one watching his wife sleep soundly as our child does cry or scream in the night. Apparently Mommy Ears are not necessarily for moms, as in our family it's Dad who has the ears and the mom that sleeps through it. What can I say, mama likes her sleep.

Anyone that tells you that you can have too many clothes for your baby is a bitter liar. Sabrina's closet was truly atrocious in terms of quantity and I can tell you girlfriend wears all of her clothes at least twice. So there.

I don't get mushy about much, even as a new mom, but I do have to say smiles from your kid, especially when they are so new, is the best freaking thing ever. Really. It only took one to melt this cold little heart, and every single morning she makes everything better with her super smiles and giggles.

I still say the mesh underwear were the best ever...not really b/c they're comfy, but b/c they're not yours and you can throw them away without a second thought! I'd love to have seen that nurse's reaction!

Happy blogging! Post pics!
