Happy Birthday

This morning, I was very quiet as I changed Sabrina's diaper and got her dressed for the day.

This morning, I had a one year old. A child that barely fits on her changing table, one that attempts to escape from the diaper change at any chance she gets. A child that flashes me a huge smile showing her 3 1/2 teeth. One that puts her pajama bottoms on her head and waits with perfect comedic timing for me to look at her and laugh. A little girl who grabs me and pulls me down to her face so she can slobber on mine. One that smiles, laughs and says (we think) "hiiii dada" when he comes in the room. A toddler to be, who crawls faster than I can run, enjoys getting into a stand by herself and waiting for the applause, who takes one or two steps before falling and deciding crawling is a better idea. My little girl, who is the light of my life. Always.

It truly is unbelievable that one year ago today, we hadn't met. At this very moment I was enjoying my all-to-brief-encounter with my friend, the epidural. In six short hours, my daughter would be born. Not without a bang, of course - who needs to breathe when their born? Not Sabrina! How appropriate, considering everything we went through and endured to get to that moment. Anything less would have been boring.

Chris and I had no idea what to expect when Sabrina was born. We didn't read any books, didn't take any classes. We expected her to cry all the time. She didn't. We expected it to be hard. It wasn't. We expected to love her. We didn't expect to feel like this. It is unexplainable, so I won't even try.

Our little embryo that wasn't given much of a chance has given us so much. We positively, absolutely adore her with every fiber of our being. There isn't a single thing I would change about her. (Okay, so maybe I'd make her head less flat, but that would only be for her benefit, not mine). She has an amazing personality. She's happy. Almost always. She's loving. Always. She's sweet, and daring. She laughs as much as Chris and I do. She's a perfect fit. We could not be happier.

So this morning as I changed her diaper, I reflected on my little baby love and how thankful I am we have her. How thankful I am to get to know her and be a part of her life. I truly love her more than I could ever, ever explain.

As I dabbed the start of a tear from my eye, she let out a piercing scream for no apparent reason. Then she smiled. This is her new thing: screaming. I dislike it almost as much as the teeth clacking/grinding thing she started doing when her top tooth started to come in.

Happy First Birthday, my baby love. We love you more than anything in the world.

Happy birthday little one - you are very nearly my baby's same age (08/08/08) and you sound as delightful as my daughter - except for the screaming - which is bringing down the house here too.

Well done, Mama! Her birthday is indeed cause for you to celebrate yourself!

Happy Birthday! Getting through the first year is a real milestone. I wish, however, that time didn't go by so fast.
