Okay, here's the deal. [*big sigh*]
Sabrina got some monetary gifts for her birthday. I'm positive the givers of said gifts intended the money to be for Sabrina. To go in a savings account for her. For her future.
We totally have a savings account for her.
But the money totally didn't end up there.
And it's not the first time it's happened.
[*not feeling better yet*]
Look, her par-tay wasn't cheap, people. I budgeted and budgeted but it still cost a pretty penny, thus leaving us very, very po' this last week. I deposited her money with the full intention of transferring the funds. As I got on the computer to make the transfer, I realized if I did, I would have to transfer money from our savings to our checking in order to cover the upcoming expenses for the week.
I hate touching savings.
So I didn't.
Sabrina's future is totally unsecure.
I hope to do the right thing and transfer the amount due to my daughter once we get paid on Friday, but I will need some encouragement from my friends in the computer. Because, really? We all know I won't do it on my own. Look at how much I've stolen from her thus far.
I'm sorry, Sabrina. But really, student loans are almost a rite of passage. They aren't so bad.

I'm the same way about money - I hate using our savings for anything that is not a complete emergency! You have time to save up some money for Sabrina... maybe put it into your monthly budget? (if you haven't already). Don't feel bad - my parents spent my college fund on their divorce and I still went, thanks to student loans :o)
Dude...I would totally steal her money. Wait...I didn't mean to type that so fast...I mean...Wait. You know what I meant. Don't feel bad about it..You are her mom...It's not like 10 years down the road you're going to be all "Well Gee Wiz Sabrina...Mommy can't buy you those braces b/c we paid for your birthday party"....
Dude, get a 529 plan. The money goes straight into it and I can't get it out. So, I removed the temptation myself. Ha ha. The good news is that it can be used for any educational endeavor-not just college. So, it's good for culinary school, mechanic school, stripper school... you get my point. We opened one 6 months before N was born and contribute to it monthly (plus put any monetary gift we get for her into it). I guarantee that by the time she is 18 it will be enough to pay for one semester, tuition only, at a state school. She is so still taking out a student loan.
I haven't done that yet, but I'm SURE that I will some day. Parties ARE expensive as HELL.
We've done it and I'm not ashamed to admit it. We've shelled out a lot of cash for those little darlings throughout the years and will continue to do so, including intricate birthdays (did I tell you Ava wants ice-skating, airbrush tattoo artist, karaoke and art projects for her slumber party this year?) college, weddings, etc. So, the fact that we failed to put that one $25 check in her account at age 5 because we needed milk seems totally ok to me. No additional guilt needed, my dear; you're one hell of a Mom and Dad.
XOXO
You gave her the party as a gift. The gifts were given to your daughter not to you.
As far as I'm concerned, I turned out to be a better person because I paid for my own college education. I am not starting a college fund for Oscar until all of my other debt is paid off.
I HAVE been tempted to raid his piggy bank, but haven't yet. :)
